Discover the Costa Blanca: Coastal roads, mountain climbs & endless cycling
Calpe had been on my list of places to ride for a while. With pros like Tadej Pogačar using the Costa Blanca as a training base, I wanted to see what the roads were really like for myself. From the Mediterranean coastline to the rugged mountains inland, it’s easy to see why so many cyclists come here, especially with sunshine for much of the year.
The riding is fantastic, with Coll de Rates a real highlight, its sweeping bends and mountain views making every climb incredible. There are also countless quieter roads winding through valleys and small Spanish villages, where you can ride for miles with hardly any traffic around.
When I wasn’t riding, I hiked up Ifach Rock for incredible views over Calpe and the coastline. After a full day in the saddle, heading to the beach or unwinding in the spa was a great way to finish the day.
By the end of the trip, I understood why Calpe is such a favourite among cyclists. Between the challenging climbs, quiet mountain roads and Mediterranean setting, it’s a brilliant place to spend a week on the bike, whether you’re chasing the routes ridden by the pros or simply enjoying everything the Costa Blanca has to offer.
